Looking for some quick and easy alkaline vegan snack ideas? In this post I share a roundup of 7 plant based snacks to keep you full and satisfied on an alkaline vegan diet. Keep reading to get inspired and get links to buy ingredients online.

What are alkaline vegan snacks?

  • Alkaline vegan is a term used to describe a plant based diet which focuses on consuming alkaline forming foods.
  • Snacks is a term used to describe a little meal consumed in between larger meals. Snacks can be enjoyed at home or on-the-go.
  • Alkaline vegan snacks are little meals which include a majority or all alkaline forming foods. Overall, these snacks don’t overburden the kidneys.

Alkaline diet calculating

Here’s a basic overview:

  1. The kidneys process foods after consumption.
  2. Foods which are alkaline forming do not overburden the kidneys.
  3. Foods which are acid forming tend to overburden the kidneys.
  4. There is a simple calculation called PRAL (potential renal acid load) which is used to determine which foods overburden the kidneys.
  5. Calculating PRAL for foods is done by using a simple mathematical formulation, which is:

PRAL (mEq/day) = (0.49 × total protein (g/day)) + (0.037 × phosphorus (mg/day)) − (0.021 × potassium (mg/day)) − (0.026 × magnesium (mg/day)) − (0.013 × calcium (mg/day))

  • Foods and meals with a negative score are alkaline forming.
  • Foods and meals with a positive score are acid forming.

Cronometer app is a gamechanger for plant based alkaline dieting.

When you set the Cronometer app to track PRAL Alkalinity you can easily see if your daily diary is trending alkaline or acidic. Here’s a example of the Nutrition Balances section in the Gold Cronometer membership section:

Calculating alkaline diet with Cronometer app

Here’s a quick tutorial video where I describe what an alkaline diet is, how to determine which foods are alkaline forming, and my favorite app for tracking my alkaline diet:

To determine the nutrition facts of certain foods and recipes, I like to use the Cronometer app.

This app allows me to input specific foods from specific brands, and gives nutrition facts in detail for each item. I can also input several foods to create a recipe and get the nutrition facts for the recipe.

In the Cronometer Gold Membership there is an option to calculate PRAL alkalinity and track your alkaline diet.

7 alkaline vegan snacks

Here’s an overview of the snacks mentioned in this post:

  1. yogurt with mango and banana
  2. chocolate peanut butter smoothie
  3. potato chips
  4. kale chips
  5. popcorn with nutritional yeast
  6. dried apricots
  7. guacamole with rice cakes

Note: The below alkaline vegan snack ideas are calculated using the Cronometer Gold Membership App based on specific food products mentioned below.  If you choose different food products, you may want to check to make sure they are alkaline forming in the Cronometer app prior to consumption.

Yogurt with mango and banana

I like to purchase the Trader Joe’s Organic Unsweetened Cashew Yogurt and enjoy a 3/4 cup serving with one banana and 1/2 cup thawed frozen mango.

This yogurt with fruit snack bowl is filling, sweet, and packed with vitamins and minerals.

Chocolate peanut butter smoothie

This smoothie is quick and easy to prepare. It includes banana, Trader Joe’s Unsweetened Soy Beverage, hemp seeds, peanut butter, maple syrup and Z Natural Foods Organic Raw Cacao Powder. It’s packed with vegan protein, vitamins and minerals, and tastes super creamy and delicious.

I make a double batch of this smoothie and enjoy it as a late morning snack for two days.

Potato chips

Maybe you’re traveling and don’t have very many vegan food options available to you. Did you know that plain vegan potato chips are generally an alkalizing food? It’s true! You can find plain potato chips with salt at most convenience stores and coffee shops these days.

Check the ingredients statement to make sure they are vegan. If you have the Cronometer Gold Membership, check the brand and product to make sure it’s alkaline forming.

I checked the Boulder Canyon Sea Salt Potato Chips (pictured on the right) and these are very alkalizing!

Kale chips

Another great alkaline vegan snack for on-the-go are Kale Chips which are packed with nutrition and have a delicious flavor. One of the most popular brands of Kale Chips is Brad’s.

These kale chips come in a variety of flavors. I haven’t checked them all, but I know for sure the Original flavor is alkalizing.

Popcorn with nutritional yeast

A popular snack is popcorn, but did you know if you add non-fortified nutritional yeast on top it becomes an alkaline snack? It’s true!

I like to purchase the Trader Joe’s Organic Popcorn with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and top it with Micro Ingredients Organic Nonfortified Nutritional Yeast. Not only is this a delicious and crunchy alkaline vegan snack everyone will enjoy, it’s packed with B vitamins, protein and minerals.

Dried apricots

Fruit is a great snack, and dried fruit is especially for when you’re on-the-go. One of the most alkaline dried fruits is apricots.

Dried apricots are sweet and packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals, and they’re also super alkalizing! I like the Terrasoul Superfoods Organic Apricots, 4 Lbs (2 Pack) which can be purchased on Amazon.

PRAL Alkalinity score: -11.1 for 5 apricots (very alkalizing!)

Guacamole with brown rice cakes

Avocados are a great alkaline vegan food, and when you pair them with tomatoes, onions, garlic and lime juice, you get a very alkalizing snack called Guacamole. I like to enjoy Guacamole on top of Lundberg Organic Brown Rice Cakes for a healthy and delicious alkaline vegan snack.
