What is Daniel Fast bread?
Daniel Fast is a term used to describe the diet which Daniel, from the Old Testament of the Bible, consumed during his time in captivity from the Babylonian king. It was a simple, plant-based diet. Unleavened bread is approved for a Daniel Fast.
What is unleavened bread?
Leavening is a term used to describe an ingredient added to baked goods to make them rise or get fluffy. Common leavening includes:
- Yeast
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
Leavening is considered “sinful”. It causes cravings and leads to gluttony. It is also a biblical metaphor for hypocrisy, as well as preventing truth and sincerity. For example, leavened breads include:
- Cakes
- Muffins
- French bread
- Pizza
- Cookies
Unleavened breads include:
- Tortillas
- Flatbreads
- Crackers
Unleavened breads generally don’t cause cravings so they are great for the Daniel Fast. Enjoy unleavened breads with dips, spreads, and as wraps.
Biblically, unleavened bread was consumed in remembrance of sacrifices made for God, as well as a symbol of truth and sincerity.
Bible verses about leavening
Here’s some scripture about leavening from the New King James Version:
Exodus 12:15
Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.
Exodus 13:3
And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.
Leviticus 10:12
And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons who were left: “Take the grain offering that remains of the offerings made by fire to the Lord, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy.
Matthew 16:6
Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
Matthew 16:12
Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Luke 12:1
In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”
1 Corinthians 5:6-8
Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Daniel Fast Bread
Make your own unleavened bread for Daniel Fasting with this simple recipe.
Makes 6-8 large flatbreads
Equipment
- Food processor
- Baking sheets
- Cutting board
- Knife
Ingredients
- 4 cups Organic whole wheat flour
- 1 3/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup Organic extra virgin olive oil
Directions
- Simply combine all ingredients in a food processor.
- Mix into a dough for 1-2 minutes.
- Transfer dough to cutting board. Cut into 6-8 pieces.
- Using your hands, form into large thin flatbreads. Place onto greased baking sheets and spread out dough to form flatbreads.
- Bake on a greased baking sheet at 450ºF for 10-12 minutes.
Tips
Mixing this dough in a food processor is ideal because it takes less time and makes less mess. Also, the blades of the food processor help to shred the whole wheat fiber, making it more tender.
Seasoning
Flavor with garlic, onion, and fresh herbs. Top with sliced onions and garlic salt before baking if desired (see photo below).
