What are alkaline food supplements?
- Alkaline foods are foods which help the body digest foods without over burdening the kidneys. The kidneys help keep the body in a balanced pH state. When we eat too many acidic foods, the kidneys have to work overtime to balance our body’s pH.
- These are called foods which are “alkaline forming” after ingesting.
- Alkaline food supplements are foods which are added to the diet specifically to help maintain a balanced pH. These are supplements to the diet which are actually foods. For example, instead of consuming synthetic ingredients like are oftentimes found in supplement pills, food supplements are comprised of one or more food ingredients and can be purchased in powder format.
In this post I specifically share food ingredients which are alkalizing. This means you can purchase these in the grocery store in areas like the spices aisle.
Which are the best alkaline food supplements?
In my opinion, the best food supplements are actual foods! For this post I share my considerations for the best supplement options based on PRAL scores and usability.
PRAL values for alkaline food supplements
You can calculate the acid load of foods on the body by using a formula called PRAL (potential renal acid load). This formula helps you determine if foods are alkaline forming or acid forming.
The formula uses the nutrition values in the food including:
- Protein
- Phosphate
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Calcium
As a general rule of thumb based on this formula, foods high in protein and phosphate, and low in potassium, magnesium and calcium are acid forming.
And, foods low in protein and phosphate, and high in potassium, magnesium and calcium, are alkaline forming. These foods are high in these minerals what are also called “electrolytes”.
- A negative number means the food is alkaline forming.
- A positive number means it is acid forming.

For example, 1 teaspoon of dried basil has a -0.6 PRAL alkalizing effect on the body. But if you eat 2 teaspoons during a meal or day, you get -1.2 alkalizing effect.

They are also great for balancing the total PRAL for meals because you can combine alkaline powders with acidic foods to help counteract their acidic effects on the body.
