What is an alkalizing green drink?
- Alkalizing is a term used to describe foods which are alkaline forming in the body.
- Alkaline forming is a term used to describe foods which help our kidneys process nutrients to keep our bodies in a balanced pH state. Some foods are acid forming, meaning our kidneys have to work overtime to process them to keep our bodies in a balanced pH state. If we eat a lot of acid forming foods it can overburden our kidneys leading to health problems like acidosis.
- Green drink is a term used to describe a beverage packed with chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is structurally similar to our own blood and helps alkalize the blood.
- An alkalizing green drink is a term used to describe a beverage which includes alkaline forming foods.
Ingredients
Like I mentioned above, chlorophyll is the key ingredient in making an alkaline forming green drink. In addition to chlorophyll, you can add lemon juice and stevia extract to make this more delicious in flavor. I’ve included affiliate links to purchase these ingredients on Amazon:
Chlorophyll
There are several types of foods which are packed with chlorophyll and can be used for this recipe, including organic:
Lemon juice
In order to make this alkalizing green drink recipe taste good, including:
- Lemon juice, bottled
- Lemon juice, frozen
- Lemon juice powder
- Fresh lemon juice
- Fresh lemon with rind, blended with water – this is the most alkalizing option
Alternatively, you can use lime juice! I prefer the flavor of lemon juice for this recipe.
Water
I like to use reverse osmosis water.
Sweetener
Optionally, you can add a sweetener to make this drink more flavorful without compromising alkalinity, I like to use stevia extract which makes this drink taste sweet without adding sugar.
Equipment
There is no equipment required to make this alkalizing green drink recipe!
Spoon and cup
All you really need is a spoon and a drinking glass or jar. Simply combine the ingredients and mix!
Blender, optional
Alternatively, I like to use a fresh whole lemon blended with water because it’s more alkalinizing than bottled juice, but only slightly. It also contains the rind which includes limonene which is also referred to sometimes as “citrus peel extracts”.
