Wondering what a 1950s housewife ate and made for her family in the 1950s? In this post I share several videos where I read through a healthy eating food guide printed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Home Economics department. I also share a printable PDF 1950s diet meal planning template from this guide so you can eat like a 1950s housewife too. Here’s what 1950s housewives ate and fed their families.
1950s Housewives Diet Guide
Here’s a video where I share the nutrition information from this pamphlet from the USDA. Learn how to lose weight and feed your family healthy meals making from scratch dinners, breakfasts and lunches each day.
Food in the 1950s
This guide is great for saving money on food as well because it shares thrifty and frugal ways to create delicious and healthy meals for everyone in the family, including children, men, women and pregnant and nursing mothers. It’s easy to see why people were healthier then because these meals are made using whole foods without a lot of processed ingredients.
Meal planning in the 1950s
Back then in the 1950s, the USDA encouraged eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, and also good quality animal foods like meat, eggs and dairy. However, if you cannot afford or do not want to eat animal foods, they also share how to get a variety of vitamins and minerals using plant-based foods as well.
Here’s a video where I share the meal planning template from this vintage healthy eating guide:
