What is Daniel Fast whole wheat flour?
Daniel Fast is a term used to describe the diet Daniel, from the Old Testament of the Bible, consumed during this time in captivity from the Babylonian king.
Here’s what the New King James Version says in Daniel 1:11-16:
11″So Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king’s delicacies; and as you see fit, so deal with your servants.” 14 So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days.
15 And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies. 16 Thus the steward took away their portion of delicacies and the wine that they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.”

Plant based diet
The book of Daniel says he only ate “vegetables and water” which we now consider a “plant based diet”. Some people Daniel Fast strictly on only what we now call “vegetables“, however many people consider whole wheat flour to be part of the Daniel Fast because it is a plant-based food.
Unleavened Bread in the Bible
A popular plant based food to enjoy during the Daniel Fast is called Unleavened Bread. It’s a simple flatbread made without leaven. It’s also enjoyed during the annual Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Feast of Unleavened Bread
Leaven is mentioned in the Old Testament in reference to the sacrifices made during the exodus from slavery. The people left in such a hurry, they didn’t have time to leaven the bread. Now people honor this event by clearing the whole house of “leavening” and only enjoying unleavened bread for a week.
In Exodus 13:3 of the New King James Version it says:
And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.
And, in Deuteronomy 16:3:
You shall eat no leavened bread with it; seven days you shall eat unleavened bread with it, that is, the bread of affliction (for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste), that you may remember the day in which you came out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.
Leavening as sin
Leaven is mentioned again in the New Testament in the book of Matthew 16:6 in reference to hypocrisy and sin:
Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
And clarified in Matthew 16:12:
Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Bread of Life
Jesus referred to leavening like sin in the above conversation. In John 6:35, Jesus says:
“And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
Jesus references Himself as the “bread of life” and leavened bread can be viewed as an adulterated version of this symbol.
It doesn’t mean we can never eat leavened bread, but for the Daniel Fast, the focus is to remove sins from our life and get closer to God. In order to do this, choosing unleavened bread made from organic whole wheat flour is a great choice.
In 1 Corinthians 5:6-8, Paul describes leaven like this:
“Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
What is leavening?
Leavening is a term used to describe ingredients such as active yeast, baking powder and baking soda which cause baked goods to rise.
For example, cakes, cookies, yeasted bread, cinnamon rolls and pizza dough all call for leavening.
