What are plant based alkaline foods?
- A plant based diet is a diet which focuses on consuming plant foods. A plant based diet is also referred to as a vegan diet, however not everyone who eats a plant based diet is strictly vegan. Vegans eat a fully plant based diet.
- A plant based alkaline diet is a diet which focuses on consuming mostly alkaline forming foods from plant sources.
- The term “alkaline forming foods” means foods which, after consumed, produce an alkaline pH in the body. Some foods which are acidic prior to consumption actually become alkaline forming, for example lemons.
- Alkaline forming foods are foods which are easy for the kidneys to process. Acidic foods are harder for the kidneys to process.
Alkaline diet calculating
Here’s a basic overview:
- The kidneys process foods after consumption.
- Foods which are alkaline forming do not overburden the kidneys.
- Foods which are acid forming tend to overburden the kidneys.
- There is a simple calculation called PRAL (potential renal acid load) which is used to determine which foods overburden the kidneys.
- Calculating PRAL for foods is done by using a simple mathematical formulation, which is:
PRAL (mEq/day) = (0.49 × total protein (g/day)) + (0.037 × phosphorus (mg/day)) − (0.021 × potassium (mg/day)) − (0.026 × magnesium (mg/day)) − (0.013 × calcium (mg/day))
- Foods and meals with a negative score are alkaline forming.
- Foods and meals with a positive score are acid forming.
Cronometer app is a gamechanger for plant based alkaline dieting.
When you set the Cronometer app to track PRAL Alkalinity you can easily see if your daily diary is trending alkaline or acidic. Here’s a example of the Nutrition Balances section in the Gold Cronometer membership section:

YouTube video about what is an alkaline plant based diet
Here’s a quick tutorial video where I describe what an alkaline diet is, how to determine which foods are alkaline forming, and my favorite app for tracking my alkaline diet:
To determine the nutrition facts of certain foods and recipes, I like to use the Cronometer app.
This app allows me to input specific foods from specific brands, and gives nutrition facts in detail for each item. I can also input several foods to create a recipe and get the nutrition facts for the recipe.
In the Cronometer Gold Membership there is an option to calculate PRAL alkalinity and track your alkaline diet.
What are the best alkaline foods and drinks?
The best alkaline foods are ones which are packed with vitamins and minerals and have a very negative PRAL Alkalinity score in the Cronometer app. These are oftentimes going to be foods found in their natural state.
But, they can also be food products which combine a variety of alklaine forming foods even with some acidic foods. Or, if these foods are fortified with vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.
20 plant based alkaline food products
Here’s a list of some of the most alkaline vegan food products, according to the Cronometer app PRAL Alkalinity meter. I’ve included affiate links to some of the items to Amazon so you can create your alkaline vegan grocery list while reading.
Remember, a negative PRAL Alkalinity score means a food is alkaline forming. A 0 score, means it is not acidic forming, but also not alkaline forming. 0 score foods are good for alkaline diets because it doesn’t add acid to the body.
Alkaline vegan butter
Vegan butter is generally made from a mixture of oils and doesn’t contain a lot of protein. This means it’s likely to be either neutral or possibly alkaline forming. Here’s several brands of vegan butter and their PRAL Alkalinity rating from Cronometer app:

After researching alkaline water brands in Cronometer, I noticed the ones I searched came up as 0 score on the PRAL Alkalinity meter. This means they do not help alkalize the body. They don’t add acid, but they also don’t add minerals to the body after drinking.
The water I prefer to drink for an alkaline diet is sparkling mineral water. Mineral water contains a lot of natural minerals which are great for alkaline dieting. This is great for travelling and on-the-go. You can drink some of this sparkling mineral water if you’re having to eat food which is acidic forming to help balance you out. Here’s my favorite brand:
- Gerolsteiner Sparkling Natural Mineral Water: -1.714 score for 8 fluid ounces
